Ramp It Up: Tour de Bowness
We had a great time connecting with community about our Ramp It Up project at this year’s Tour de Bowness Street on Monday, August 1. The Street Festival corresponds with the annual Tour de Bowness cycling race and was great day out for families. Ramp It Up creates communities where every person can access every space through a fun and engaging project that raises awareness and helps remove barriers. Physical barriers in our neighbourhoods prevent many of us from enjoying some of the amazing buildings and spaces that Calgary has to offer. With labour from inspired volunteers and leadership from small businesses, we can offer single-stepped storefronts with a custom ramp made at no cost to them. Accessible Housing recently provided 10 single-step ramps to businesses in Bowness including Optimum Wellness Centre, Little Shop of Pleasures, Bowness Auto Parts, Cadence Coffee, Grassby Art Studio, Jed’s Equipment Ltd., N & K Nails and Spa, The UPS Store, Bowness Vietnamese Restaurant amd Undercurrents. These ramps were built by volunteers from Accessible Housing and SAIT through a collaboration for SAIT’s 100th anniversary. Dinner for Doors 2016
BUY TICKETS Our annual fundraiser, Dinner for Doors is an experiential and inspiring evening that launched in 2014. Last year, over 120 people attended, raising $55,000 to help open doors that are accessible and affordable for people with limited mobility. This year will be an even larger event at a bigger venue, The Coast Plaza Hotel and Conference Centre in Calgary. The emcee for the evening will be Ken Lima-Coelho, Vice President, Marketing & Communication and YMCA Calgary. Ken is a passionate storyteller with over 20 years of experience in broadcasting, arts and community. Awards will be presented at the event this year including The Kent Hehr Leadership Award which will celebrate and recognize The Honourable Kent Hehr’s personal resiliency and transformative ability to turn a vision into reality. Kent Hehr, M.P. is a resident alumnus as he previously lived with Accessible Housing on two occasions.
