Awareness Encourages Change

Awareness Encourages Change

We are continuing to run our campaign to raise awareness about the critical shortage of affordable, accessible housing in this province. We’ve been addressing issues that are often uncomfortable to talk about but are a real and urgent part of a housing crisis that demands bold, coordinated solutions.

Every step forward is a win, and we’re pleased to see that RAMP funding has recently increased.

For many Albertans with mobility challenges, home isn’t truly home unless it’s accessible. That’s why the Residential Access Modification Program (RAMP) has been a vital lifeline for decades—providing financial assistance to people with disabilities to modify their homes and improve accessibility.

What Is RAMP?

RAMP is a government-funded program that provides grants to low-income Albertans with mobility challenges. These grants help cover the cost of home modifications such as installing ramps, stair lifts, widened doorways, accessible bathrooms, and more.

The goal is to allow people to remain safely in their homes, rather than face unnecessary institutionalization or risk becoming part of the homeless population.

The program is especially important for individuals who use wheelchairs or walkers and need structural changes to live safely and independently.

What Do the New Numbers Look Like?

As of this year, RAMP has received a significant increase in funding limits:

  • The annual maximum grant has increased from $7,500 to $12,000
  • The 10-year maximum has risen from $15,000 to $24,000

This means Albertans can now access more funding, more quickly, to meet urgent accessibility needs.

It Matters

A safe, accessible home is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. Yet for many Albertans, the cost of modifying a home remains out of reach.

This increase in RAMP funding isn’t just a budget change; it’s a meaningful shift that could dramatically improve the quality of life for thousands of people across Alberta.

And it comes at a crucial time. Like much of Canada, Alberta is in the midst of a growing housing crisis, particularly for people with disabilities. Accessible, affordable homes are rare, and accessibility is still too often left out of new community planning.

This funding increase won’t solve the whole problem—but it may help more people stay in their homes and live with greater safety and dignity.

Advocacy Makes a Difference

We have been working hard to raise awareness about the lack of accessible housing in Alberta and we firmly believe that shining a spotlight on this urgent need, has helped and will help influence decision-makers.

Investing in existing homes is one of the fastest, most cost-effective ways to increase accessibility and government support for programs like RAMP is a crucial part of the solution.

We thank the Alberta government for recognizing the importance of home accessibility, and applaud this positive step toward building a more inclusive province, where everyone has the opportunity to live safely and independently in their community.

There’s Still More Work to Do

We’ll continue to advocate for long-term, systemic solutions to the accessible housing crisis and we invite you to be part of the progress.
