RAD Renovation by Accessible Housing

We make residential and commercial spaces accessible for everyone.

Since 1997, the Residential Accessible Design (RAD) Renovations Program has been helping Calgarians live safely, independently, and with dignity. More than a renovation service, RAD is an essential part of Calgary’s continuum of preventative care. By creating accessible homes that enable people with mobility challenges to remain where they belong: at home, connected to their families, their communities, and the support networks that matter most.
By removing physical barriers and improving home accessibility, RAD helps individuals maintain their independence, preserve their mental and emotional wellbeing, and reduce the risk of injuries, hospitalizations, and unnecessary transitions into institutional care. Accessible housing empowers people to continue living safely in their own homes while reducing pressure on caregivers and helping families stay together.
Our experienced team manages accessibility renovations from concept to completion for residential homes, businesses, and community spaces throughout Calgary and surrounding communities. Every project is tailored to each client’s unique needs, creating environments that are safe, functional, and empowering.
RAD is an investment in healthier people, stronger families, and a more resilient community. By preserving safe and affordable accessible housing, RAD helps prevent more complex health and social challenges before they occur, reducing pressure on healthcare and social support systems while enabling people to participate more fully in work, education, volunteering, and community life.
Accessibility is not only about modifying a home; it is about creating the conditions for people to live with dignity, choice, and independence. As a critical piece of Calgary’s housing, health, and community care ecosystem, RAD demonstrates how investing in accessibility today strengthens our city for tomorrow.

We deliver tailored accessibility solutions for both homes and workplaces.

Our Project Consultants are certified professionals through the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification™ (RHFAC) program. They are skilled in providing comprehensive Accessibility Recommendation Reports for both residential and commercial spaces. These reports outline the specific accessibility features needed, complete with precise dimensions, construction feasibility considerations, and potential design specifications, ensuring tailored solutions that meet diverse accessibility needs.

The first step in transforming a space (be it a residential home, business or community space) into a safer and more accessible one is to find out exactly what your space requires to meet the accessibility needs.

Our Rick Hansen accessibility certified professional will conduct a thorough assessment of your physical space and provide an Accessibility Recommendations Report that you can use for your accessible renovation. This report includes a description of the assessed areas, accessible renovation recommendations with dimensions from guidelines and photos of examples (referenced from the Standards Council of Canada CSA National Standard of Canada B651-18).

This first step will give you the introduction you need to create a safer and more accessible space for you, your staff or your community.

RAD Renovations can help organize and review your funding grant / loan application(s) to potential funding programs such as RAMP (Government of Alberta), SHARP (Government of Alberta), Easter Seals Alberta and other disability specific funding organizations.

We will assist you to understand and meet eligibility requirements where possible, review your forms for accuracy, in addition to collating all documents required to apply for funding.

If you are a property developer applying to the CMHC (Canadian Mortgage Housing Corporation) and looking to meet their Accessibility Criteria Attestation form requirements in order to be approved for funding, the RAD Renovations Program can complete that form for you.

Our Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certified Professional is qualified to assess your building blueprints, make accessibility recommendations and sign off on the CMHC Attestation Form so you can complete your funding application to the CMHC.

With your input, RAD Renovations can create a basic accessibility design drawing that can be utilized for your accessibility project when working with contractors. Having an accessibility design drawing created by a Rick Hansen Accessibility Certified Professional ensures that detailed plans have accurate dimensions and are confirmed against accessibility guidelines and your needs. This also ensures that the scope of work for your project provides equal information to multiple contractors so that you can easily compare their quotes – apples to apples. This way, changes and adjustments can be made before construction starts, saving you costly delays and change orders.

We understand how intimidating, stressful and overwhelming it can be to coordinate a renovation that entails accessibility codes and construction, especially when the safety of your loved ones or patrons is at stake. Our goal is to reduce your stress by simplifying and communicating the process in a way that can be easily understood. RAD Renovations will assist you in coordinating part or all of the process – from quotes procurement, contractor selection and oversight of work done.

Are you a property developer or builder looking to ensure your accessible units and features are to code? RAD Renovations can provide a preconstruction review for residential or commercial sites with recommendations for enhanced accessibility. Our Rick Hansen Accessibility Certified Professional will provide a detailed assessment of your proposed project using your proposed plans, elevations, sections and specifications. Whether you require a detailed assessment to comply with the CMHC National Housing Strategy and CMHC Mortgage Loan Insurance Accessibility Attestation or a Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Rating, RAD Renovations has you covered.
