Red Shirt Day – Wednesday, May 29, 2024

Red Shirt Day of Action for AccessAbility and Inclusion. A day when people across Canada wear red to visibly demonstrate support for people with disabilities and their families, celebrate the achievements of disabled Canadians, and pledge a commitment to creating a fully accessible and inclusive society. 

We join in celebrating Action for Accessibility and Inclusion. Accessible Housing proudly acknowledges Red Shirt Day, honoring individuals and families living with diverse abilities. We stand in solidarity with Easter Seals Canada and express our gratitude for the #RedShirtDay movement and ongoing support to those living with limited mobility.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

This place we know as Calgary is known by many other names. In the Blackfoot language, it is called Moh-kins-tis, the Iethka Nakoda First Nations refer to this place as Wicispa Oyade, the people of the Tsuut’ina Nation calls it Guts-ists, and the Metis call this area Otos-kwunee.

With respect and humility, we acknowledge that we are gathered on the ancestral and traditional territory of the Blackfoot Confederacy, made up of the Siksika, Piikani, Amskapipiikani, and Kainai First Nations; the Iethka Nakoda Wicastabi First Nations, comprised of the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations; and the Tsuut’ina First Nation. The Calgary area is also homeland to the historic Northwest Metis and to the Otipemisiwak Metis Government, Metis Nation Battle River Territory (Nose Hill Metis District 5 and Elbow Metis District 6).

We are thankful for the opportunity that this special place provides for us to engage in reconciliation and to make life better every day for all who gather, visit, or call this place home.
