September 30th marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. 🧡

Today, Accessible Housing had the privilege of welcoming Elder Russell Burns, who led us in a meaningful smudge ceremony and circle. As a residential school survivor, Elder Burns shared his story and the lasting impact it had on his life. Thank you, Mosum, for your wisdom and for being with us on this important day.

We pause to reflect on the painful truths of our shared history and renew our commitment to the ongoing journey of reconciliation.

We remember the children who never made it home, the survivors of residential schools, and the families and communities affected by these tragic events.

In this week's #TipTuesday by RAD Renovations, we're diving into the importance of adding handrails for safety and accessibility!

Did you know many homes built before the late 80s often lack exterior handrails on main entry steps and landings? For seniors who are still mobile, this can be a significant falling hazard.

👉 To enhance safety, ensure your entry stairs have handrails extending from the bottom walkway to the top, and ideally, all the way to the door. Remember, many people have a stronger or weaker side, so it's crucial to have handrails on both sides for support in both directions.

🔨 Building codes allow handrails to be installed between 34”-42” in height, but we find that 36”-38” is a comfortable height for most people.

Another memorable 3-night stay at William Watson Lodge in Kananaskis! 🏕️

Inclusio residents explored different trails, enjoyed a captivating nature show, and spent quality time playing card games and gathering around a cozy bonfire. Daily walks to the lake were filled with fresh air, scenic views, and relaxation, and were thrilled to spot numerous birds, chipmunks, gophers, and even a moose passing by our cabin! ✨

We capped off our trip with a farewell steak dinner and we raised a toast to the wonderful time we had together. Residents and staff had an absolute blast! 😊

Since January, Bridge to Home has been busy, even

Since January, Bridge to Home has been busy, even as we’ve adjusted our program capacity. In April, we shifted from 77 to 60 participants. As a graduated focused program, we had folks that were on the trajectory of graduation.🌟

Since May 2024, we’ve welcomed 4 new members to our program, and we’ve already housed 2 of them in accessible apartments in under a month. 🏠 Currently, 2 more participants are awaiting housing that meets their unique accessibility needs.

New Intakes since January: 4
People moved into housing: 10
Graduations: 8

We are pleased to share the completion of another accessible renovation project by RAD Renovations. We had the pleasure of transforming a client’s ensuite bathroom by replacing an underutilized soaker tub with a spacious, barrier-free shower. We also installed new flooring that complements the overall design and a comfort-height toilet for improved functionality and comfort.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

This place we know as Calgary is known by many other names. In the Blackfoot language, it is called Moh-kins-tis, the Iethka Nakoda First Nations refer to this place as Wicispa Oyade, the people of the Tsuut’ina Nation calls it Guts-ists, and the Metis call this area Otos-kwunee.

With respect and humility, we acknowledge that we are gathered on the ancestral and traditional territory of the Blackfoot Confederacy, made up of the Siksika, Piikani, Amskapipiikani, and Kainai First Nations; the Iethka Nakoda Wicastabi First Nations, comprised of the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations; and the Tsuut’ina First Nation.
